Welcome from the student computer science labs at Michigan Tech. I made the trip up here and got moved in over the past couple of days. Of course, just like every year, something goes wrong.

Almost two weeks ago I signed up for Resnet, our campus internet service. All was going well and I got the notice it was activated in my apartment before I even left to move in. Of course something had to go wrong. It always does. Last year I was without Resnet for a week because someone screwed up my ethernet address when setting up the service.

On Thursday I go down to the Resnet office to pick up my DSL modem. I plug it in back at my apartment and the power doesn't even come on. Friday my roomate went down to exchange the modem and sign up for internet service. We get the modem back and it won't sync. Saturday I call the Resnet technical support, so they send someone over to take a look at it. No surprise, it's a problem with the lines and they need to send someone up on Tuesday to work on the lines. So here I am in the labs, the only place I can access the internet. Too bad the labs are just far enough away to be impractical to walk to several times a day.

To make matters worse, we got new furniture in our bedroom this year. It seemed like a good thing, since last year our furniture was pretty crappy. However, the way they set up the furniture made it impossible to get into one of the beds (both beds were lofted over desks). So Wednesday night I had to sleep on the pull-out couch because I couldn't get into my bed. When my roommate showed up on Thursday we took down the lofts and stacked the beds. Now we have extra parts that we need to get rid of. Of course the apartment office was out of furniture removal forms on Friday, so we have to go back on Tuesday.

At least not having internet has given me time to catch up on Morrowind.

Finally I'm back from vacation. It was kind of a nice break, but was a bit long. On the way there we got stuck in Chicago traffic for 2 hours, making the total trip time to my aunt's cottage in Michigan about 8 hours in a van with no air conditioning. The following days were mostly pointless, following a basic routine of get up, drink coffee until 11, eat lunch, go swimming, eat dinner, talk until we go to sleep. I guess it goes by a bit faster when you're drinking.

On the second day we were there, my cousin's kid (3 yrs. old) started staring at me. Not to be outstared, I stared back. It turned out that this was all that she needed to like me and not leave me alone for the rest of the week. At the most intense moments of staring she'd put her head against mine and stare at me with her blank eyes from under an inch away. Kind of creepy.

I guess I didn't miss much by not going to my cousin's wedding (wasn't invited). Apparently they had to walk 1/4 mile on a dirt path to get to the place they wanted to get married, everyone who knew what was going on wore flip-flops, whereas my relatives didn't so they dressed up nicely and got their shoes dirty, and they didn't serve alcohol, not even champagne. I can't imagine the reception lasted long without decent entertainmnet or alcohol.

Finally made it back into the development routine today though. I'm still not up to 100% output though. Today I made a dumb mistake and switched two lines of code around, which took 2 hours to find. Hopefully all that is behind me now, as I prepare for stage 2 of implementing the water planes. Today I fixed the material settings not being reflected in the gui. Of course during the process of developing I keep on discovering more minor bugs. The first on the list is when editing an object's values via the gui, pressing delete will delete the object instead of deleting the character after the cursor. Hopefully I can get the water planes fully implemented within the next few days, because I leave for school next week. After that, who knows how much time I'll be able to put it, although I should still be able to get quite a bit of work done. I just won't be able to work as quickly as I'd like to. If I'm really lucky, I'll get the accurate object editing working before school starts and can take on another task before we release the first iteration of Dwarf towards the end of the semester.

This week is going to suck. It already has so far.

Last night we lost our hockey game 4-3. I scored a goal, but I also took a slapshot off the inside of my foot and now it hurts to walk.

Today I get a call from my mom saying that we have to put our dog, Sparky, down. It's a good thing though. He was 13, had cancer, had half of his liver removed, could hardly walk, and was in a lot of pain.

Wednesday morning I have to get stitches removed from my back, because last week the doctor dug a mole out of my back.

Thursday I have to take my mom in for a colonoscopy. Thursday night I'm stuck going to Michigan on "vacation".

My cousins wedding, to which I'm not invited, is on Sunday. In fact, none of the cousins are invited. So instead we're staying at my uncle's cottage for a few days. I'll miss my hockey game on Monday night, and on Tuesday is my grandma's 80th birthday. Finally I get home on Wednesday, with just over a week left until school starts.

I started the process of removing the ocean in Dwarf and replacing it with multiple water planes so we can control different properties for each one. Unfortunately, that was on Friday and I haven't been able to get back to my development machine since, and I won't be able to until Wednesday afternoon. My goal is to get water planes implemented before I leave on vacation, which means I have to get them done on Wednesday. A lot of the code is in place, but it is still going to be hard to get them implemented in such a short amount of time.

Well, I'm finally starting to get over this damn cold. Last night we had a hockey game, I think the excersize helped get over the cold a bit, and we finally won a game. It's the strangest thing. During the winter season the team always does well. We've won the league championship for the last two years. Come summer season and we always suck. But not last night.

We had too many guys show up actually (usually we have too few) and I had to rotate though every other line. That kind of sucks because, as I figured out after the game, I got about 8 minutes less of playing time than everyone else. But maybe it was for the best. I was sick after all, and last night I didn't feel tired at all out there, which is odd for being under the weather.

I started out on my first shift and put the puck in on a pass across the crease, but the ref ruled the net was off its moorings. It was, but it had no effect on the goal and the goalie kicked it off and the ref didn't blow the whistle until after I had already scored.

This goalie was the type that just pisses you off. We played against him last week and he stopped 66 out of 68 shots we put on him and lost the game 3-2. The shot count was 68-23. This week he wasn't quite as good, but still stopped all the shots I put on him.

I had this nice breakaway too, I cut left past the defender and put one towards his five hole. It takes one of those miracle bounces off the inside of his pad and out. On another one he deflected it off the inside of the post and out. On another chance I was sitting to the side of the net, just in front of it, and the winger shot a puck across the crease. I knocked it out of the air, but instead of going forward, it somehow goes backward right into the goalie.

We managed to win the game 7-3 though.

On an angry note, I just got a call from my dad saying I need to drive down to my doctor and sign some medical release forms because I'm changing doctors. Now I don't happen to know where the doctor is because he moved since last time I saw him and I've been away for 8 months. I love the driving instructions my dad gives. They go something like "Drive down this road and past the first light when it crosses this other road. You know those new buildings they just put in behind the new wal-mart?" (me) "No I didn't even know they put in a new wal-mart." (him) "Well its in there somewhere." Wonderful. Hopefully the internet directions can save me again, although I'm not thrilled about having to drive. Gas is expensive and I need to fill up again.

EDIT:

Ok, so I made it to the doctor's office. It ended up being just down the street from the old place. Then I go get gas. $26 to fill up. Not bad. I have a small car. But I go to use my debit card and it gets rejected twice. I don't know if I screwed up my pin number (I haven't had to type it in in a while) or what, but I was starting to get worried. I know the card (from Wells Fargo) has some problems with some machines and has to be run as a credit card instead of a debit, so maybe that was a problem.

Have you ever woken up with a black eye? I got up this morning and my eyes kind of felt like they were swollen a bit. Sure enough I go to get ready to leave, I check in the mirror and I have a black eye. I have no clue how I got it. Maybe I hit myself in my sleep.

EDIT 2:

Great, now my upper lip is swelling as well

04:10 here. Just got accepted to be a member of the programming team. I spent the night studying up on the current progress of the project and plan to do the same tomorrow. After that I won't be available until Wednesday. Hopefully I can start making real contributions to the project soon.

I'm Nathan Paul, a 21 year old programmer. Let me tell you a bit about myself. I've been programming for about 7 years or so. I go to Michigan Technological University. I'm a senior there. I'm experienced in C++, .Net, and a multitude of other languages.

Some of my interests are AI, algorithms, and learning new APIs (boost is my favorite so far). I've taken courses on graphics programming. I'm not bad at it, but I don't find it as interesting as the other topics. I prefer Windows to Linux (and dislike Mac altogether). I like to learn new things and challenge myself.

I play guitar for two bands, A Life Elided and Effigy.
