Well, what really helps is finding out what people want to see in a game, what they've found lacking in MMO's currently on the market, what they like about MMO's, what keeps them playing.
Particular skills, races, weapondry, clothing, how realistic they want a game to be vs. how fun. Cooking is usually a standard skill in most games, but eatting isn't something alot of players want to take time out of playing to do. Having pets is another popular trend in alot of MMO's but few of them get very involved since, again most players don't want to use playing time to care fo a pet. It helps alot to get a grasp of what players want, how big an impact it'll have on their enjoyment of the game, and how much of a draw back a feature will have on people's limited play time.
