Project Wish _ Speed Modeling _ Speed Modeling Challenge #2

Posted by: wspnut Jan 29 2007, 12:14 AM

Hey again all you 3D fanatics! Are you ready for the second modeling competition? I knew you were...

Entry Dates: 1/29/2007 to 2/11/2007
Voting Dates: 2/12/2007 to 2/18/2007
All times end at midnight, PST

For a change in concept from the last competition, this week will concentrate on a scene rather than an object. Have fun!

Theme: Mountains

Remember that texturing and background objects/textures are not required, but are definitely recommended! Try to make a scene, not just an object. Also, it will help judging members to understand your project more fully if you append a wireframe mesh along with your rendered image.

Now get modeling, and good luck!

Terragen TechPreview 2
48minutes (not including rendering time)

It's my first time using it since the huge upgrade... so I'm not too fond of the results. Expect another submission sometime this week...

terragen? cheater tongue.gif

Posted by: wspnut Jan 31 2007, 08:06 PM

haha, would you rather I take the heightmap in terragen and render it in 3ds max? Same thing =P

Wow, Terragen looks outstanding, and I like that creation time smile.gif !

I have very little x.p. with terrain/landscape art, but here's my attempt (certainly fun to do);
3ds Max, Mudbox, PhotoShop (for texture creation only, no touch-up on render).
~ 4 hours (at least...? I did a lot of learning on this.. ack! smile.gif )

The snow is all part of a mix map, using a falloff map in it, -with just white used. The ground texture looks like this: http://www.ground-studios.de/stuff/Felswand-tile.jpg. The rest of the ground is from a: mix map, bump map, reflection map (if you look to the right in the pic, you can see the stars getting reflected on the ground for a little sparkly effect smile.gif ), and the Mudbox displacement map, -and one light (Mental Ray Omni), ~ 14 minutes to render this frame;
