We need a mission statement.

What is a mission statement? A mission statement is a statement of the role (or purpose) by which an organization intends to serve its stakeholders. It describes what the organization does (our capabilities), who it serves (our stakeholders), and what makes the organization unique (our justification for existence).

The mission statement needs to define our purpose and reason for being. It needs to say what, in the end, ProjectWish will be remembered for.

It should be noted that our stakeholders are the MMORPG community at large, and specifically the Wish community.

Our mission statement (at the very least) needs to answer these three key questions:

1) What is the purpose of ProjectWish?
2) What is the business of ProjectWish? (What do we do?)
3) What are the principles or beliefs that guide our work?

Some other key points of our mission statement should be that:
- it needs to express ProjectWish?s purpose in a way that inspires support and commitment. For those of us who are familiar with Wish, our name alone does this. For those new people who don?t know what Wish even is, it should speak to them.
- it needs to motivate us.
- it needs to be written in a way that is easy to understand.
- it needs to describe what we do.
- it needs to use words chosen for their meaning and clarity (not cleverness and beauty).
- it should be short enough so that people can know it.

Sure I can come up with something for myself, but it won?t have much meaning to many of you. This is where I turn to you, the ProjectWish community. We need your input and suggestions on what our mission statement should be.

I?ll start you off with an example. This example is taken directly from a different MMORPG that is currently in development. Here is what they say their mission statement is (slightly edited to remove names):

Now I want to hear your ideas. Tell PW what you think its mission should be.

Our mission ist to provide a deep and meaningful gaming experience similar to the one found in pen and paper roleplaying games by establishing an immersive and believable environment where player actions actually matter.

Our purpose i to provide a stable, ever challenging, ever changing, environment for players to immerse themselves in fully and become one with their character. To give players not just a feeling of accomplishment but a feeling of pride that they have helped create something that will help mold the flow of the world around them. Project Wish is dedicated to maintaining a balanced, interest grabbing setting and truely listening to the players when they speak out about our creation.

I like it too except we need to put something in there to the extent that we are "providing a fun environment for all in the community to help" or something to that extent. Other then that I like dezwo's.

Here is a Thread on another Board that convey what we here should be doing: Written by a Game Dev.

I know it deals with Mods but isn't this Project One Great Big Mod?

This is a good article for people to read, Hankellin. Thanks for sharing it with us.

For those of you who have read the post, we are currently in what the author refers to as the "vision phase".

In this thread, we are trying to develop a vision for who we are and what we are going to do. This is a high-level statement about us.

You guys are coming up with some good ideas. Let's see some more and see if we can't get our mission statement ironed out.

Pepsi's mission statement was simply: Beat Coke.

Since you're trying to make a clone of Wish, the mission statement seems very clear: Copy Wish.

The mission statement can be changed once that goal has been met. But for now it seems that everyone's goal is to copy wish. So make the statement reflect that.

Our mission is to create an online persistent world which lets the player immerse themselves in anything they choose. We will provide them the canvas and the paint, so to speak, and they will then paint the picture of their character as they see fit. We plan to recreate the best feelings we have ever recieved from any MMORPG (or any RPG for that matter) in this project. We want this to be a community more than a source of revenue. We want to break the 'cookie cutter' mold that has plagued the MMORPG scene since the coming of Everquest. We want our players/characters to be free in an ever-changing world that has endless possibilities in every direction. This means 'choice' more than it means 'size.' And finally, we want this to be free (no cost) if it is possible when the time comes.

That shoudl probably be consolidated a bit. It seems too wordy for a mission statement (at least the ones that I have seen).

I honestly don't think we're trying to make a clone of Wish. I think Wish will serve as an inspiration, but I have no motivation at all to just "redo" Wish as it was. I rather think we should go beyond what Wish was (conceptually, not neccessarily in quantity).

Things would be different if we built upon Wish's codebase, but as this will not happen, I don't think copying Wish will take us anywhere.

Have worked a little on it and incorporated Kall's idea:

Our mission is to provide a deep and meaningful gaming experience similar to the one found in pen and paper roleplaying games by establishing an immersive and believable environment where player actions actually matter. To achieve this, we are assembling enthusiastic and reliable developers, artists and storytellers in a safe and fun environment.

Something short:

We are here to create something no one else has, to have any idea by anyone be looked at, to have a world that everyone wants.

Something long:

We are here to create a world like no other. To be enjoyable to all, to have ideas that matter from anyone. To be better than the rest. We are here to create a world where anyone can be.

The last sentence revised: "To achieve this, our team of developers, artists and storytellers are creating a 3D persistent online world containing a safe, fun and immersive environment that will include ever-changing content."

Here is my take on dezwo's statement:

Our mission is to assemble an enthusastic and experienced team to develop an immersive and enjoyable gaming experience similar to the one found in pen and paper roleplaying games by creating a believable and evolving environment where player actions impact the world at large.

Some changes based on feedback

Our mission is to form a community driven team of entusiastic gamers with the goal of creating an immersive and enjoyable gaming experience similar to the one found in pen and paper roleplaying games. This team will create a believable and evolving environment where player actions impact the world at large.

After a good day's work, much rewriting, and lengthy discussions, I think we've finally managed to iron out what we all feel to be an accurate mission statement:

Good job team!

Since our mission statement is now done, I'm locking this thread.
