We use an IRC server for a way of connecting to the community. As well some game development discussion takes place here whenever the fire is lit.

HIRC - http://www.xs4all.nl/~hneel/software.htm <---... I know nothing about this one

#projectwish (this is the public channel please do not talk about game stuff here, even though Pandra forgets and talks about game stuff in here all the time )

To join a channel:
/join #<channel name>
To list channels on a server:
/list
You can also use the web browser Java applet to log into the IRC. Look for the link at the top of the forums called "Live Chat".
XChat on linux is free... just so you know
irssi on linux(or bsd) through screen is what the cool people use.
