Hi all. I'm Minthos, a newbie programmer, and here is a description of what I've been up to the past few days.

After considerable tinkering, I managed to install and configure everything I needed to compile and run dwarf in windows. The release version of dwarf, that is. The debug version wouldn't run after I compiled it.

To make a long story short, I gave up. Windows sucks anyway smile.gif

Now I'm trying to compile dwarf in linux. It's.. hmm.. possibly even more difficult. I managed to compile and install ogre, even the included samples. I've written a makefile for dwarf, and one for DotSceneInterface, but both of them fail to link properly. I don't know why. I'm going to try to figure it out tonight.. UPDATE: I moved all the source files for .scene into the dwarf directory and compiled them all together, and suddenly it just worked. Except for one slight detail: the resulting program segfaults as soon as I run it. I tried debugging it, but it seems debuggers have some trouble understanding the program, so it caused me a bunch of grief. I left it for now, and instead moved back to windows and have started playing around a bit with our level editor (added ability to jump around). End of update.

I tried before I installed VC++ in windows to get Code::blocks up and running in linux, but that was apparently easier said than done. I only wanted CB to make the task of porting dwarf to linux easier, and I'm not sure it would have been much easier with it. Needless to say, I gave up on that also. One of the reasons why I want to use g++ and make is that I get better control over configuration settings. I doubt I would get that in any IDE.

Still, I tried today to import the project to anjuta and kdevelop. Neither of them seemed particularily willing to read .vcproj files..

Conclusion: Microsoft sucks biggrin.gif
