OOC:

I was thinking this thread would be good to list RP resources, tips for RP, a place to ask questions about RP, links to good image resources, links to other RP guilds, sites, etc.

Please feel FREE to share your resources, or ask questions.

-----------------------------------

One resource that I think is fantastic is "Invisible Castle"; Online Roll Dice smile.gif (free, very good)

This is not required to use in RP, but it can be very fun to use.

Example:

*Gassy sees Pandra, he waits for his best chance to throw the net (Gassy will need at least a 19 or 20 on a 1d20 to be successful).*

*Pandra zips up close, pixie dust at the ready, Gassy throws his net! (Die Roll: 20 !! OH MY GOD! A 20!!! I haven't rolled a 20 in forever! Wow! lol! biggrin.gif ) * A PERFECT throw! Gassy nets Pandra!*

*Pandra looks at Gassy and laughs, "why isn't the pixie afraid," thinks Gassy... Gassy leans in close to see the netted pixie. Pandra throws her pixie dust in Gassy's face ( As long as she doesn't roll a 1 on a 1d20, Pandra will hit Gassy with the magical dust), Die roll: 8 ! Tags Gassy with Dust. Gassy looks off into the distance with a blank stare, completely pacified by the dust. Pandra takes off the net, paints a mustache on Gassy's face, and fly's off.* smile.gif

(Can't believe I got a 20! lol! smile.gif ).

Not a bad way to let die rolls in on RP smile.gif . That's just an example, it could be used in many different ways; highest roll wins, combine scores for team effort attempts, allow for skill or ability to give you a + or - to the roll, etc.

Please feel free to use this in the "Grey Grey Horse Tavern and Inn RP" if you want smile.gif .

The most important thing in forum RP is the content of your post. You are writing a story, your posts should look like they could be from a novel. Layout and grammar are important to make your posts easy to read and understand.

This excerpt from Gardens of the Moon shows what I mean.

It might seem a bit prudish to ask for correct use of speach marks and other punctuation but if we all try our RPs will be a lot easier on the eyes. A 10+ line post with little or no punctuation is a nightmare to read so people won't bother.

Edit 1: Thread title. Inculde helpful info in the title and maybe a little out of character paragraph before your intro.
Things such as: Is the RP open for any one to join, any restriction you want on the characters that can be played. Maybe you are just writing a story, do you want others to comment via reply to the thread or to leave it so there is no scrolling through 'crap' between your posts.
Some examples -

Mar'Vellis annual Troll Hunt I (open to all)

Noxious fumes and skin disorders (Gassy's story, comments welcome)

The orphan skin cloak (evil RP, invite only)

To prance about in Shiny Armour (Paladin Guild RP)

I'm sure I'll have some more tip/rants for you later.

I used to have a bunch of links to well written Role Play Do's and Don'ts and Role Play Etiquette essays. That of course was on the computer that died back in Febuarary >.<. I'll try to find them again, or we can try our hand at making our own. It was simple stuff like Don't insta-hit someone elses character, give them the option to dodge or otherwise escape. Don't perform multiple actions that couldn't realistically be done together. When pausing, acctually pause in your posting to give other characters a change to react before continueing an action. It was simple stuff like that that seems old hat to alot of RPers, but beginners really wouldn't know about.

I used to be heavy in the forum roleplaying games... The message board that had the most games on it was hacked the the owner got fed up so let the board die.

I can give you a couple links to roleplay etiquette guildlines used for competitive type posts. We used to have competitions between characters... An arena of sorts.

I just have to ask the right people.

Other than that I can try to start a role play game based on DnD... I even tried one where the players were all dragons...

If this sounds viable let me know.

Hi Hankellin smile.gif . Yes, that sounds viable. Would it be possible to attempt to have it based in Project Wish, or a Project Wish like setting?

And, you are very welcome to join the 'Grey Horse Tavern and Inn' RP if you would like.

Great to have an experience RP'er smile.gif !

Here is another dice oller that I think is a bit easier to use:

Openroleplaying Die Roller

It has simple plus/minus instructions.

For me to base it in Project Wish(PW) or a PW like setting I would have to know more than I do about the world and setting than I do now and possibly more than the developement team knows.

I would hate to start a RP game and have people upset when what happens in the game thread does not match (even remotely) PW.

I can do a skill based system instead of class based...

But that is about as far as I can go with out inside knowledge.

I will flesh out a starting story or just steal from one I started a long time ago and let new players enjoy it. It did not get very far along.

Any Ideas I post here can be used in the PW world with my blessing.

Well, to do any kind of "better" RPing, we would need a GM. So, until we won't have such, we won't need any kind of stats. And if we'll get one, I'll have to modify my stats... By the way, why not create some kind of PW roleplaying rules ? That wouldn't be predefined with stats or classes, and player would earn skills while playing. Still could be based on rolls.

This is what I was thinking... skill based system, being ran in forgotten realms for basic locations... of which I know very little. I do have a map somewhere though. unsure.gif

Thanks Hankellin smile.gif , that's a great resource, very well done & lots to it.

I'm comfortable with the Free Form, and at the same time, I do very much enjoy the random chance that die rolling allows for. I guess I might describe it as 'Free From Die Rolling RP' ?

So, if Gassy wants to throw a rock and hit an orc, one way it might be done;

----------------
joshpurple; Gassy sees the orc, thinking that he is well concealed from the orc, Gassy decides it would make a lot of sense to piss him off, so Gassy throws a rock at the orc's head.
(Die; 1d20, success = 17 or better. Roll: Miss with a 14! )
Gassy misses by just a little bit, the rock cracks into the tree near the orc. The orc turns to see where the noise came from.

---------------
Or,
-------------

joshpurple; Gassy sees the orc, thinking that he is well concealed from the orc, Gassy decides it would make a lot of sense to piss him off, so Gassy throws a rock at the orc's head.

GM (Hankellin); O.k., you will need a 14 or better on 1d20, if you miss, the orc might notice. Use the die roller I posted, and email me the results.

joshpurple; Gassy throws the rock (email sent).

GM; The party sees Gassy pop up and throw a rock at the orc, it misses! The orc turns to see where the noise came from.

joshpurple: Gassy waves at the orc and moons him.

-----------------------

Or;

-----------------

<other ideas welcome! smile.gif >

And, as I mentioned, I will be very happy to go with what you decide on Hankellin. I completely trust your judgement, and I consider this an RP you are setting up (Very cool of you, Thank you!) .

Revisiting this because I'd like to see something semi-formal result as a guide line for role playing on the forums and that can later be used a guide for role playing in the world.
