The entity shifted and stretched, further than would have been possible in a physical form. Back, floating along the astral strands again, how had that happened? That question, innocent and specific as it may seem was dangerous here, for it triggered the memory of events from the very beginning.

It began when the human daughter of a caravan master made a pledge in a temple dedicated to no god and all gods. To live and to die and to serve until the stars no longer burned. It was an odd oath, but it had been odd times. The land she knew then had been ravaged by plague, sorcery and warlords. She’d pledge expecting to live and be reborn in the defense of her city. What she’d gotten had not been at all what she expected.

She… that was the feminine abstract wasn’t it? Odd that such things didn’t matter here but mattered very much in the physical. Always a she, a female, blonde haired and green eyed, and fair skinned or as fair skinned as a race allowed for. Odd to remember being a human, she hadn’t been human in the physical since her first death.

Her second like she’d been elven, a refined noble lady who studied plants and who marriage had been arranged. What a useless life that had been. She hadn’t even studied anything proper like herbalism in with all that plant poking. She’d had dreams about being human that life though, dreams of the trade roads and wagons packed with goods, the smell of exotic spices. Reflecting now maybe the second life was meant as a cushion, a barrier to the first.

Then she’d been a gnome in a city full or clock works where it was never quiet. How she’d hated that city, hated the noise and almost constant explosions. She’d left when she was young, broken a marriage her gnomish parents had arranged for her and fled once she was certain she could find for herself. She’d meet up with a human warrior, they’d traveled together, been lovers in that life. She hadn’t found him again, though she’d looked so very hard. Was that why she’d had so many lovers in her following lives?

The memory blurred, she’d been born a gnome again, in the same city or one very similar. She hadn’t waited much past puberty before leaving that time. Through odd twists of fate she’d found herself in hostile lands disguised as a white haired, ebony skinned elf. There she’d encountered Saltin for the first time. She was sure she’d meet the obsessed fool in other lives. He wanted her, not merely for his wife or lover, but wanted to possess her, wanted to bind her mind, power and will so she was little more than an automaton serving him. She hated him.

She had defeated him in that life, defeated him at the cost of her own life, but it but an end to his wanton murdering in that land. Then she’d been called away to gentler lands, been a tawny skinned elf living in a tree house and making her living with a reed flute. She’d understood what the animals were saying in that live, picked berries for rabbits, ran with wolves and fished with eagles. She remembered others vaguely from that life, but none that made a lasting impression.

That life seemed more like a dream, or a holiday. Perhaps it was, for in the next she was a gnome again or something like a gnome. Small and nimble, but there were no clock work annoyances in the land she was born to. There was a war, and the elves were growing sick and loosing their power. They were searching the land for a moonstone. It was so odd. She remembered walking with two elves into a cave and then nothing more of that life.

Instead it jumped ahead to her being a girl, or a kitten. Her form was a cross between a woman’s and a cat. She was covered in sleek cream fur with dark paws, ears, and tail. She remembered being called a Siamese and dancing in a bar. In that life she’d run into Saltin again. She’d been going home and passing by a temple to a god of lust when a voice had screamed for help. She’d turned, run into the temple and saw Saltin there, knew him in that instant and what he was as he stood over the corpses of the temple priests.

She purposefully skipped over the rest of that life; it was painful to remember, though handy. Being helpless at the hands of a madman was not a path she’d fallen to again. She’d been a cat-girl in another life, more pleasant by comparison. She’d had white fur with soft silver grey markings and green eyes. People had always commented on the green eyes because they expected a snow leopardess to have blue eyes. She’d experienced the grace of the powers granted to one who followed a divine path in that life. Frustrating because she’d always felt pitted against impossible odds, but the magic a cleric wields was so… seductively pure and cleansing. She’d felt whole in that life for once.

Other lives became jumbled together and she took a moment to sort them out. She’d been pixie with cotton fluff hair and penchant for trickery. She’d been a gnome twice again, once in frozen lands littered with broken war machines and once in an aired desert where the winds and sands scoured metal walls, bone litter and rock outcroppings alike until they gleamed under the relentless sun. She’d been an elf who commanded elemental servants to do her bidding. She’d encountered Saltin twice more and defeated him, or at least saved herself from being at his mercy again.

She’d been an houri, an elusive creature born from the mating of an elf and a nymph. She’d be pursued all her life; towns had burned to the ground for offering her a night’s shelter. She’d found freedom on a ship that sailed the stars and brought her vengeance back on those who’d pursued her, brought war to the slavers of that land.

She’d been a ships pilot and ferried cargo between distant stars, between planets that were light years apart. She’d had cybernetics, very advanced clockwork things implanted into her. She’d had nightmares about the gnome cities in that life. She’d hated it, hated the machines, the solitude, and hated being referred to by a number instead of a name.

She’d been a pixie, wild and carefree. Magic was her life line and her pet; she’d needed only to reach out her hand, stretch her fingers and the magic would move to her will. She’d traveled the lands of that world with an elf that looked like Saltin but acted nothing like that despicable man. She’d wonder if perhaps she’d found her love again at long last and cursed the situation that wouldn’t allow them to be more than close friends. She’d died, she didn’t like to dwell on her deaths, but that one had been a good death, defending him. He’d cradled her in his hands and pledged to find her again in that world or the next as she’d departed the physical and returned to astral ways.

Last life she’d been and elf, blonde haired and green eyed as when she’d been a human girl in that life a millennia ago. Shadows had bent to her will; daggers had responded to her like living servants, the power of those dark things had been a heady mix. She’d killed, murdered and revealed in it. In the end she’d feared she was turning into Saltin and turned her daggers on herself.

And here she was, floating through the astral again, waiting for the call that would plunge her into the physical again. It was tiring yet alluring, would it be a new world or one she’d traveled before? Would she find her lover again or would she find Saltin and engage in titanic battles. Would the next life be a reprieve, a reward for what she’d suffered or would it be a life of atonement for past sins? She realized she was eager to be in the physical again, eager to learn what life awaited her next.
