How can they conclude from 10days of beta testing that they wouldn't get enough subscribers? Even without any advertising they were the most popular download on FilePlanet and got 50k (real) accounts.
This game had so much potential! If they would only advertise it enough...

(And afcourse have a good newbie guide/tutorial!)

But imho, marc is lieing. This cannot be the true reason of the close down. And if it really is, then they noticed it way too late and they are retards.

problem is not subscriber , but person that can play at same time.
if server is limited by exemple 8000 player , then the project doesnt work.
their idea was over 10 000 player at same time.
they dont whant 10 server with 4000 player but 1 big server with 40 000 player.

But they had the choice to scale back to ensure a profit was obtainable and we would all be playing Wish ... Thus bullshit would be the word of the day.

Maybe that's what killed Wish, no backup plan.

After watching Horizons and a few other companies file Chapter 11 are you sure that closing wish wasnt the back up plan? It sure makes more sence then going into debt for multi millions of dollars.

Ugh.
I read that reply and it just gave me a "are you kidding???" reaction.
Come on, Wish was UNKNOWN to the most MMORPG player in Germany (that is just the market I know about, but I'm inside with several big portals for MMORPG and fansites and know what is public known and information is handy and what not). All the people I got contact with that were either in beta or had no idea.
A few people spread information by mouth and most were former Hz-Player. But you know what? We have a general problem as Horizons player, we are mostly a quiet bunch, too much bashing after praise and hope makes that ... So don't expect many of us to run around preaching for Wish when it is still so much in beta, most wanted first hand information. But those found out of Wish beta mostly AFTER the mouth spreading started = beta application was shut down.
Then many saw how bad performance with this hardware requirements was and several decided to wait for next beta and hope for it to become more comfortable (including the cluttered GUI with too many windows and way too few ingame available help to understand what is necessary or available). Than most of the time for europeans server were down = people quit frustrated.
And several other people realized they are not reaching the hardware reqs too - or had win98 still. It is UO/Hz player after all, you know???
So just that I get it:

You open a beta with a few hundred people and no advertising at all and get 68.000 apps before it is even open - and close it.

You suspect the potential market auditory who mostly have been disappointed in MMORPGs that did not stand up to UO feature richness or from a MMORPG that well, was much hope and preach but did not fullfill that either, leading to constant bashing to evangelize a game before they even got into it.

You setup no torrent tracker and people hate fileplanet, have trouble and wait but oh well.

You have 10 days of beta, mostly server down for european times and wonder how few are concurrent online.

You have hardware reqs that are the top of today or at least over what your target auditory has, that still buys premade computer all 3 years or so and calls upgrading to put a GF4 MX in instead of a GF2. Instead of slowing down the ones in forum saying "Why on earth you would expect you can play with that, you are sooo stupid" you stay quiet and no response or reconsideration of that. Ask about driving people away with an "buy stuff for us or leave" attitude.

You have a game full of features but no ingame help and a still not very intuitive UI (that is not about blame or not expecting it to become better, it is about status quo) and wonder people get frustrated and lost.

So ... that is from where your market analyzation comes, yes?
Am I allowed to laugh a bit?

Ps: To add, you have setup something most older former UO/Hz guys are very much valueing and pay more than normal or donate, you have no competition except UO but we already COME from that. It is not that this was our alternative 2 ...
And you state funding is secure, we have time, we will only release something finished. What about "Well we probably shut down if you don't join in a hazzle beta now (ugh it was closed, right) to show your longing for wish"?
If that way of market analyzation wouldn't be so sad I'd laugh tears.

The posts are getting old, I understand everyone is heart-broken over this mess... But remember, MR doesn't owe anything to anyone. They don't even owe us an excuse, The point is; They are done. They quit. They gave up. Now if we would all just stop complaining and do something about it... I think that would be alot better.

No matter if it helps to discuss it or not, I feel a need to comment the news so I do. ;)
At least we just get the confirmation that this is all of reason for closing and I'm entitled to make my statement about that I think. I'm in that MMORPG scene now since quite some time, I know some people and so far I was right with every cancelling prediction I made - Mythica, E&B, UXO, WO (well ok, Climax picked it back up it seems) with nobody believing me, but it was obvious there was no market for that. And my predictions about success most had or will have were true so far in every case (Hz - thought I was a die hard fan and played it so long, I'm not blind you know. SoR, WoW vhs. EQ2).
I still have a few predictions left.
Wish folding like that with such a statement for reason ...
I was at the beta boards and I warned there would be a problem to attract enough people with that hardware reqs. That Wish would get trouble catching enough subscribers thought I loved it already. But than one day to the next just cancel it instead of reconsider the graphic choice, wew that definitelly unexpected and I'm really puzzled after so much effort you drop it like that. :|

I think one thing MR might not have taken into considering is that by the time the game was available for release people would start leaving WoW and EQ2. They may have figured they had the market gobbled up, but the 6 month initial memberships that alot of people purchase would run out and from what I've heard there will be at least some leaving the game.. it only takes 1% to leave those games and goto wish to change the numbers dramatically (around 10-11k people, at $15/month=$150,000 minimum just from that) not including those already waiting for it.
They get 5% and suddenly things are crazy. Their news statement simply said 'we hope this doesn't happen to others' well if you don't want it to happen, release some numbers so people can get an idea of what they're up against.
