Project Wish _ DWARF Discussion _ First Attempt Screen Shot

Posted by: joshpurple Sep 24 2006, 04:44 PM

Edit:

NOTE:

This is a work in progress, VERY DRAFT. Just draft tests on the Alpha release. NOT a final shot by any means.

--------------------------------

Mistake corrected, -see Jerky's notes below. Thanks.

See other thread in Art.

Should dump to Dwarf Alpha/screenshots folder after pressing print screen.

Make sure that is what you are trying.

Posted by: joshpurple Sep 24 2006, 04:50 PM

Thank You Jerky, will do! smile.gif

Edit: Indeed! Dumb me! That is working great!

Here's the real screenshot:

NOTE: This is a DRAFT WIP, by no means a final shot. Again, just some draft tests with the DWARF Alpha release.

NOTE:
using a pre-release version of DWARF (GUI was still imperfect).
-I have the current release now smile.gif

great looking centaur! amazing work. The proportions look perfect, I'd love to see a skinned version of it.

Posted by: Jerky Sep 25 2006, 11:22 AM

Yeah, just in case anyone compares their screenshots to Josh's, he was using a pre-release version of DWARF, so the GUI was still imperfect. He has the new version now.

No one but me probably noticed, but I sure did smile.gif. *shudders*

And I have no clue what I'm supposed to be doing with Dwarf. *shakes her fist at Yellow* You and you're "oh it's easy"

So much for messing around with terrain designs and stuff.

You all are the BEST! biggrin.gif *Blush!* Thank Yous!

Pandra, I'll help you with the Editor. I'll make an HTML online Manual with screen shots, and a step by step on 'How to's' . You'll get it smile.gif .

Posted by: joshpurple Sep 25 2006, 05:33 PM

Here's my little attempt at some 'How To's' with DWARF smile.gif .

NOTE: These are DRAFT works. Just the current scene I've been using to work with the DWARF release. Very UNOFFICIAL, and all corrections are welcomed.

Start > open up DWARF after installing it ( I selected 'Full Screen' & DirectX on install for the workspace ) screen looks like this:

IPB Image

http://ProjectWish.joshpurple.com/Dwarf-start.jpg

You don't get the little red wizard tongue.gif , but he's here filling in for the Red Arrow.

You want to select that File tab > and then Open...

IPB Image

http://ProjectWish.joshpurple.com/Dwarf-001.jpg

A Load Menu will open > I selected "Dwarf_sample.dwarf"

IPB Image

http://ProjectWish.joshpurple.com/Dwarf-002.jpg

Then select Open > my scene looks like this,

IPB Image

http://ProjectWish.joshpurple.com/Dwarf-003.jpg

Hit F10 > the cursor disappears, and now using the mouse (no clicking needed) rotate the view down so you can see the terrain > Any objects in the scene will (currently) appear very, very small. The below pic shows the scene after I have rotated the mouse down, & the wizard's circle is around a centaur mesh I have in,

IPB Image

http://ProjectWish.joshpurple.com/Dwarf-004.jpg

Keeping the mouse pointed at the Terrain > hold down the ' W ' key, you will begin to slowly move at the ground > Tap the Shift key as you hold down the ' W ' key & you will move faster. Tap the Shift key again, and the speed will increase again. To move around in the Editor (since you have hit F10 key ) you can use the AWSD keys & the mouse rotation. After I move in closer to my centaur mesh, it looks like this;

IPB Image

http://ProjectWish.joshpurple.com/Dwarf-005.jpg

You might not have any mesh in your scene yet, or you might see some grass, or trees, etc. The PW Team has already included objects & terrain items for you to work with from the Resource Browser. The Centaur mesh is just more draft development work in progress.

Get comfortable moving around in the Editor, this can take a little time to get comfortable with. As long as you have selected F10, you will be able to move about. When you hit F9, you exit that viewing mode.

I move in on my Centaur mesh, and get in front of him, looking down;

IPB Image

http://ProjectWish.joshpurple.com/Dwarf-006.jpg

Those little white blocks are his bones, heh, heh. Ignore them. Now to add an item from the Resource Browser > select F9 , this takes you out of the movement mode > select an item from the list;

IPB Image

http://ProjectWish.joshpurple.com/Dwarf-007.jpg

Then select 'Add to World,'

IPB Image

http://ProjectWish.joshpurple.com/Dwarf-008.jpg

An "Object Edit" window will open > now move your cursor onto the scene, where you want your object to be created;

IPB Image

http://ProjectWish.joshpurple.com/Dwarf-009.jpg

See next post, I hit the image max per post, pardon smile.gif .

Posted by: joshpurple Sep 25 2006, 05:33 PM

Cont.

Now when you click in your scene, that item will appear, I selected "flower1.mesh"
which now looks like this;

IPB Image

http://ProjectWish.joshpurple.com/Dwarf-010.jpg

The Flowers are a little big for my albino Centaur, so to scale them down, I go over to the Object Edit window and check the Scale;

IPB Image

http://ProjectWish.joshpurple.com/Dwarf-011.jpg

I enter a value of .3 ;

IPB Image

http://ProjectWish.joshpurple.com/Dwarf-012.jpg

And then select the Scale button > flowers scale down like this;

IPB Image

http://ProjectWish.joshpurple.com/Dwarf-013.jpg

You can move the item position around with the cursor, but the item will move very fast, and you may 'loose track/control' of it. If you use the Object Edit Window, you will find a little more control. Select the ' M ' for Move, and the ' R ' for Rotate. Then enter a value, and select on the Axis you want the item to be changed by (x+, x-, y+, y-, z+, z- ). Use small values to start, 5, 10, 30, 40.

Select the F10 key, and now use the AWSD keys, and the Shift key, to move around in your scene & find a good spot for the next item you want to add. I moved back, and the scene now looks like this:

IPB Image

http://ProjectWish.joshpurple.com/Dwarf-014.jpg

Further away from my scene, I could now select the F9 key > pick out another item from the Resource Browser > Add to World > click in the scene > adjust item.

When you add an item, it may be 'sunken' in the terrain mesh some. Select the item, then in the Object Edit Window, select the ' M ' button, enter 5 or 10 in the box, and select on the ' Y+ ' a couple of times. This should raise the item up, out of the ground.

More Soon! Hope that helps, and please feel free to ask questions, -correct me (anyone smile.gif ), AND don't forget to read the Manual that popped open after you installed DWARF. That has more great info!

Fantastic tutorial Josh! I love it.

Posted by: Pandra Sep 25 2006, 07:38 PM

Thank you Josh. I had looked at the manual, and lets just say I'm not technically adept so it was kinda.... over my head. That tutorial helped alot <3

I think its worth noting that the interface is really easy once you get used to it. Here's a couple hints:

Posted by: joshpurple Sep 25 2006, 11:57 PM

Yes! Thank You Njpaul! Excellent! And VERY appreciated. That speeds up work flow tons!

Question: Can I import a .mesh that will act as the ground terrain / mesh? Example: In Max I create another hunk of land, one that goes underground, I export the .mesh, now when I drop that .mesh in the meshes folder, -could that work as the ground / terrain (I'm guessing not? smile.gif )?

Posted by: Pandra Sep 26 2006, 02:30 AM

ok how do your rotate something? 'cause I tried to put a tree in and it was on it's side. Which is great if I wanted a fallen tree, but I wanted a standing up tree.

atm you wouldnt be able to walk on it, but you could create a mesh that looks like the ground for now, and we should look at the posibility of "painting holes" in the terrain so you could put a tunnel behind the hole and go underground.

When you click on an object, the Object Editor menu should pop up, select the "R" (rotate) in the top right corner, put "90" (degrees) in the box below that, and press the "-X"button. (Rotate -90 degrees on the X axis).

Note, in ogre the axises work like this:

X - horizontal (left-right)
Y - vertical (down-up)
Z - depth (in / out of the scene)

Doing more with DWARF smile.gif , and here's been my idea;

RP with DWARF

With the current RP that is going on with the Grey Horse Inn, all of the current models that I'm using can be used in DWARF.

So, I'm setting up the Grey Horse Inn inside of DWARF. I'll then post up the DWARF scene, the .meshes, and the .materials. Anyone will be welcome to grab the DWARF scene & files and mess with it smile.gif . You should be able to move parts around, add items from the Resource Browser, add lights, etc. -take screenshots of it -post 'em, continue RP (Feel FREE to add LOTS smile.gif ! ), and post your DWARF scene back up -with your added objects & updates (just make sure your DWARF scene works in DWARF, before you post up a 'broken' DWARF file).

I've been working with Gassy, as a static mesh, seeing if I can get the materials to work, the size of Gassy's model in DWARF, etc.

And, this is it (so far);

IPB Image

Full version http://ProjectWish.joshpurple.com/dwarfGassy.jpg

( Gassy has a green tongue and his eyes are solid white, there is no 'see through' part )

Wellllll, I downloaded DWARF, installed, figured out how to move around in it.

Um... The cabin is up in the sample file is up in the air, so I was thinking I would select it, and then experiment with the Object Edit window, but, um, I couldn't seem to find any way to select it.

In "Static View (F9)", tried clicking on it and using the Tab key, but all to no avail, so what am I missing?

Its been some time since I used dwarf.

You need to go into the mode where the GUI is visible and the mousecursor is available. Mouse selection is based on the bounding box so you don't have to be exact with selection.

Select the object, press M on your keyboard, then press Y and click and drag the cabin.

The hole idea seems interesting, mainly for dungeons I suppose.
Seen that my English is worth I will try to write soon something (mainly suggestions) readable about the planned virtual pw ambient creation.
I hope that it will start a constructive discussion biggrin.gif
