I would like to propose the use of collections as a type of quest in the game. The main idea is to have a NPC that will ask players to collect a set of items he like to have and will reward the player for completing the task.

The idea is not new and some mmorpg already used this type of quest in limited scale. I think this type of quest can fit to non-repeatable game much more than many other types of quests or tasks.

Such collection can be made as an epic journey that start when the player create his character with simple and easy to find items and continue with rare and harder items? reward can be given for each collected item so the player can feel he get something even when the quest is very long one.

I don't mean collection is just a pick up of some ground spawn items. You may have to work very hard to get them, maybe to kill or even to die in the process.

Benefits:
No grind (unlike quests that require a quantity of the same item).
Flexible duration (unlike quests that require one item or task).
Serves multiple players without repeatable content (random location of items).
Easy to implement ? no long and complicate story-line and events.
Not necessarily involve killing.
Items may be sellable and take part in the game economy.

Just an idea...

i like :P~ these types of things are pretty much a standard, but sometimes if it requires too much of the same items, people get fed up with them. does not require killing? like...hidden items or what >_>

Maybe an example will make the idea much more clear:

The town's jeweler tells you he can craft a necklace for you (for a small fee) if you gather some gems to fit into the necklace. He gives you a list of gems he can use and you can bring them to him in any order. Each gem adds some unique qualities to the necklace. Simple gems add small benefits while the rare and hard to acquire gem make the necklace one of the best items in game. You may buy the gems from other players or you can look for them by yourself. You may have to learn mining or jewel crafting in order to get some of the gems, for others you may need to travel to far and dangerous places?

This is just one example of collection, there are many more out there?

Sounds a little like the silifi of crimson stars from AC. And it is a fun sorta quest, tailoring what you want and being forced to make choices. (In AC only 3 of the 5 gems would fit after you repaired the axe... so you put in what you needed most.)

Collections of items, some which the character had lost, was a common test quest that Wish did, it added some variety. Be great to see this in action.

Collections are nice, but I would like to see them have more meaning in this game then they do in say... EQ2. Say you collect parts of a sword as you go throughout the land and that sword ends up being legendary or some such thing.
