I know that we have discussed something along these lines before, but I couldn't seem to find it, so I decided to write a new topic on it.

As I created a new character in Lineage 2, I realized that I started as a full grown man, who can already do everything that I need to do. I never age, nor change that much. This is an idea that makes it a bit more... realistic, which is not always better, but I'll say it anyways.

Assumptions:
The game uses the following:
  • Skill based system
  • No class system

When a character starts, they should start as a younger version. Someone around 12-15, or whatever age is accurate in the normal medieval time period. From this, they have almost no skills. They can swing around a sword, and hold a shield, but not very well.

There would be two ways to progress:

1. Learn by trial (not many people would do, but seems cool)
You could go into the world, and could gain skills through trial and error of using them. For example, you'd leave your town, basically be a runaway/rebel, and try to learn things by yourself. You might stumble upon a rabit, and start by killing that. So you get cocky after you mutilated the rabbit, and see an ogre by a fire. You decide to beat him up, but he ended up being way bigger than you thought, and you got beaten to a pulp. That trial and error method could work, and should be given special skills and abilities.

2. Learn by apprenticeship (90% of sane people would choose this.. and maybe 50% of crazy people too)
This method allows you to choose a general profession, which you learn skills in from an instructor. You can always learn more later from a different profession, with whatever penalties/limits apply to skill. This is basically the normal MMO method.

You should be able to mix and match both types at will. The learn by trial thing is only important when it comes to starting out, and learning skills. Under an apprenticeship, you go to a trainer to learn a skill. Under the learn by trial, you learn, obviously, by doing.

Back to the original point though... As your character gains skill points, the character ages, much in the way that fable does it. A player should be able to customize their looks by going to a barber for hair color or hair style, or an alchemist for aging potions, causing them to keep a younger look if they so choose.

I just thought it was an interesting idea, just because I've never heard of a 25-60 year old man starting learning his main career choice at that age. In medieval times, you were pretty much trained from when you were born to do whatever career path you were set to do.... at least we would allow our players to choose. smile.gif

Well, that's my idea, not in it's entirety, nor completely making sense, but thats all you get.

I like that idea. Your right I think there is a thread somewhere on here about it, but I couldn't find it either.

About the apprenticeship
What if once you reach a certain skill level it becomes really hard to increase, and the and one of the ways you can increase the higher skills faster, would be taking an apprentice under your wing. So you could train them. You would be the trainer.
Yes an apprentice could go to the NPC and train from him or the player could find an actual PC and train from him.

Great Idea Mort

Mort, I would like to see hair growing slowly over a period of time with playtime or age/skill-level. Since the topic of money-sinks has been discussed in the past, maybe this could be added to the list.
